Pollination Question

After we broke into smaller groups, I observed the smaller patch of Ratibida along with Tim. It was basically a long strip and after our first observation, we switched sides. I noticed that the type and abundance of visitors was noticeably different from one side of the section to the other: one side had abundant bee etc type visitors (flying with many short visits), while the other seemed to have more of the beetle etc. type visitors (more sedentary visits to individual flowers). Anyone have any theories as to why this would happen, especially given the rather small size of the patch overall?
